location: London, UK Trafalgar Cross is a video collage presented as a stage 2 response in The View From Here, an exhibition/conference in 3 stages presented and organized by the Bartlett School of Architecture, the Slade School of Fine Arts and the BBC. Trafalgar Cross is an “assemblage of perspectives” that seeks to establish a basis for the exploration of indeterminacy in the design of public space. The homogeneous whole (the original plan), fully determined by design, only exists as an abstraction. What we actually experience is fragmented and heterogeneous space. Putting the pieces together eventually forms an interpretative whole, but every individual interpretation of the plan and space is necessarily different. It is the constantly changing collection of these unscripted plans and appropriated spaces, including the author’s original intent, that carries meaning. In other words, it is not simply the view from here, it is also the view from there. |
