KING STREET ALLEY

location: Kitchener, Ontario
year: 2004

King Street Alley is a 5 minute long video shot during a day-long dérive in the city of Kitchener. It consists of a single walk around a downtown block that has been "folded" upon itself. The viewer experiences King Street (the city's main street, in front of its City Hall) and its back alley at the exact same time which results in a constant blurring of front and back. This spatial disorientation is further enhanced by the extremely slow porgression of time, resulting in a dreamlike state through which the viewer experiences an unfamiliar and unexpected environment. King Street Alley was originally projected at full scale, allowing the standing viewer to become immersed in the environment of the video.

This project attempts to find a "conjectural foundation" for an urban space that is neither completely formal nor completely informal, neither completely conscious nor completely unsconscious, but an indivisible whole encompassing elements of both sides.

On "individuated space", please see The Clean Street Paradox.
