ASSEMBLY

A Revaluation of Public Space in Toronto

Assembly is my master's thesis in architecture presented to the University of Waterloo in August 2005. The work focuses on the problem of defining and designing public space in contemporary mass society. By a method and process of assemblage, it attempts to demystify some of the myths surrounding public space, myths of equality, freedom, individual agency, etc. "Assembly" draws on three iconic sites in Toronto (Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall, the Eaton Centre, and the new Dundas Square) and three thinkers (Hannah Arendt, Jean Baudrillard and Guy Debord).
